The vision to be a community pharmacy

KERR DRUG is taking the vision of community pharmacy farther than any other drug chain. The company has positioned itself with its unique ability to provide patients, the medical community, and health plan sponsors, access to the most comprehensive and convenient health and wellness offering in the industry. KERR DRUG is currently providing services in many of its stores that far exceed the traditional drug store mix. KERR DRUG’s vision of retail community pharmacy is on the cutting edge of everything innovative about diagnostic, disease state, and drug therapy management.

KERR DRUG advanced the concept of community pharmacy care in 1998 when it launched the Enhanced Pharmaceutical Care Center model, resource centers within several of its pharmacies where patients could access clinical services in the convenience of their local drug store. Fully staffed by a Doctor of Pharmacy and pharmacy residents from partnering universities patients here were able to access screenings for diabetes, cholesterol, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, PSA, peripheral artery disease, skin damage, plus programs for smoking cessation, weight loss, asthma management, and more.

With its growing reputation as a leader in health partnerships, KERR DRUG became involved in the nationally recognized Asheville Project. That project resulted in the development of a thriving diabetes patient care service in community pharmacies, with city employees and retirees experiencing increased health levels, lower healthcare costs, and fewer missed work days. Following that programs huge success, KERR DRUG proceeded to stretch the boundaries of community health care even further.

The drug store of tomorrow today

Today, with its vast, visionary experience in clinical pharmacy, KERR DRUG has transformed more than 15% of its stores into full KERR DRUG Health Care Centers. Complementing the traditional dispensing pharmacy is a large, adjacent center with all of the affordable and easily accessed health screenings. In a world where alternative avenues to the most efficient and convenient health care are increasingly critical, KERR DRUG has set a new standard of innovation and excellence for its customers. Nationally recognized as the top community pharmacy, KERR DRUG has been awarded the following honors:

To make shopping quicker and easier, our stores include top quality photofinishing departments, many with 1-hour and digital services. Drive-through pharmacy windows make getting well a little less difficult. And we sell national and international phone cards, and gift cards for KERR DRUG, Blockbuster Video, Sears, Barnes and Noble, Bass Pro Shops, and many other retailers. Company History Re-birth of a tradition

Originally founded in Raleigh by Banks Kerr in 1951, the chain was operating 97 stores when it was acquired in 1995 by JCPenney. In 1996, JCPenney also added Fays Drug, Inc. in New York and 190 Rite Aid stores in the Carolinas to its existing Thrift Drug/Treasury Drug operation. In 1996, JCPenney's attempted purchase of Eckerd Drug Inc. raised serious FTC concerns of threatened competition in the Carolinas region. The FTC ultimately forced JCPenney to divest itself of 34 former KERR DRUG stores and 130 Rite Aids in the Carolinas. This entity was to become the new KERR DRUG . JCPenney approached over 20 serious bidders for the stores, but the KERR name and 164 stores were ultimately purchased by a group led by former Thrift Drug executives who left the JCPenney organization following the Eckerd acquisition. The re-birth of KERR DRUG marked the return of a recognized and respected name in the chain drug industry to its roots in the Carolinas.
